The Press Conference of the 12th FIMBA World Maxibasketball Championship Thessaloniki 2013





The chairman of the Organizing Committee and president of the Association of Maxibasketball championship of Thessaloniki Paris Petras, delivered the inaugural speech at the press conference that took place in the Elias Zygouris Hall at Alexandrion Sports Hall on the occasion of the beginning of the World Championship.
Mr Petras announced that “The time has finally come for the beginning of the championship" and expressed his gratitude to the World Maxibasketball Federation for their trust and support with the hope that Thessaloniki will live up to the expectations of the games. It will be, according to Mr Petras, a huge sports event with 176 teams, almost 3800 athletes from 33 different countries and he also invites the citizens of the city to participate in this big celebration.
The president of the World Maxibasketball Federation, the Argentinean Ruben Rodriguez Lamas also expressed his thanks to all the players, the volunteers and the citizens for their active participation in this event. Mr Lamas pointed out that: “We are proud and happy that the organization takes part in Greece. We hope and wish that the games have distinct success. It's the first time that SO many athletes participate in a tournament in the same city. I hope you have a good time and be happy like us now. The next week will be dedicated to sport and tourism. "

When he was asked whether the financial crisis in Greece had influenced his decision concerning the proper organization of the championship, he was assertive, stressing the fact that he fully trusts the organizing committee and all Greek people, expressing at the same time his hope that this event would be a real boost for the local economy.
Then, the president of the European Zone of FIMBA, Finnish Juha Vettanen, also underlined the importance of this championship and the huge amount of athletes that have come to participate. He expressed his satisfaction for the preparation stage of the games as he had visited Thessaloniki many times before in order to check and coordinate the necessary procedures. Additionally, according to him, “We attend every event we do to combine sports activities with tourism and entertainment. Greece has great contribution to sports events and is a country with great history. Finally I want to say that I am thrilled with the number of volunteers. I wish the best for the success of the organization”.



Furthermore, the minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Mr Theodoros Karaoglou was present as well, stating the full support of the ministry to the needs of the championship. He said that he was really happy and proud to be among so important people who have greatly promoted Thessaloniki through their notable careers. He expressed his satisfaction for the excellent cooperation with the organizing committee from the very beginning while he invited everybody to take part in this big sport feast.
The regional governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas stated the following: “The region of Central Macedonia welcomes the 12th World Maxibasketball Championship 2013 which is carried out under the auspices of the region. During the ten days of the championship, Thessaloniki will be the focal point of great athletes and great personalities from all over the world to meet, compete and offer unforgettable moments and spectacle. We wish every success to this event and we hope that all visitors will enjoy their stay in our beautiful country”.
Concerning the organization of the 12th World Maxibasketball Championship 2013, Mr Vasilis Anatolitis, regional councellor, also stated the following: “This championship constitutes a top event for our city which has a long tradition in basketball and I want to thank FIMBA and the organizing committee for the excellent cooperation with the local authorities. Good luck and let’s all enjoy this feast!”
The Deputy of the Mayor for culture and sports issues, Mr Konstantinos Zervas also congratulated the organizing committee, the volunteers and all the technicians who worked so hard for this championship. He also thanked FIMBA for their trust and for the opportunity that is given to the city for promotion and financial boost.
Mario Boni was also present at the press conference and expressed his happiness and enthusiasm for being in Thessaloniki once again, wished every success to the championship and announced his participation in the category 50+.
Bane Prelevits, the president of PAOK Basketball Club, also congratulated the organizing committee and wished the best for the championship.
Haris Papageorgiou, a great player of Aris expressed his certainty that this sport event will be a great success and also stated his satisfaction that such an event takes place in Thessaloniki.
Another important basketball figure, the 80-year-old and active player Vyron Alexiadis congratulated the organizing committee and thanked FIMBA respectively while at the same time he encouraged all people to exercise and never stop taking up sports.
The 35-year-old player of Aris, Sotiris Karapostolou also expressed his warmest wishes for the championship and hopes for a gold medal in his age category (35+) which is the youngest one in the championship.
Last but not least, on behalf of the female teams, Sofia Stavridou gave her wishes for a successful organization as well and stated that she is particularly honored to participate in such a huge sports event.
Also present at the press conference were the following: the general secretary of the ministry of Macedonia-Thrace, George Lyssaridis, Theodoros Baharoglou, Aristotelis Zournatzidis, George Gousiosn(representing veteran basketball players of Athens), Lakis Tsavas, Vivi Diavolemenou, Maritsa Papageorgiou.
A representative of the National Tourism Organization of Central Macedonia, Mr S. Yiannopoulos, Nikos Panagiotidis, Lambros Takis, Minas Toukmenidis, Nikos Hasapopoulos, Takis Karatzoulidis, Dimitris Nikiforos, members of the organizing committee, members of FIMBA.
