The official opening presentation of the MAXIBASKETBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: THESSALONIKI 2013 at the Olympic Museum (12/4)

90 days remain (12.04) for the first jump ball of the World Maxibasketball Championships on July 12th (or 13th)   while the preparations for this huge event (with dozens of teams and thousands of athletes- participants) roll in feverish pace.

The Basketball Veterans Association of Thessaloniki and the Organizing Committee of the 12th World Championship Maxibasketball Thessaloniki 2013 (12-21 July) presented both the framework of the organization as well as the volunteering program at the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki, in the event of the 16th International Congress of Physical Education and Sports Science.

Two representatives of FIMBA, the Finnish Juha Vetanen (CEO Europe FIMBA) and the Slovenian Vincent Boutalis (Head of the Maxibasketball European Commission) visited Thessaloniki in order to supervise the progress of the preparations.

Mr Vetanen expressed his deep satisfaction not only for the high quality standards of the premises provided but also regarding the excellent coordination among all the different parts of the organization. He also appeared really proud to be among those people who assented to the assignment of the MAXIBASKETBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP to Thessaloniki seven years ago. In fact he stated that: “I knew I did the right thing”.

The president of the Physical Education Teachers Association of Northern Greece, Mr. Thanasis Papageorgiou, delivered the opening speech while Mr. Theodore Karaoglou, the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace and Mr Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the regional Governor of Central Macedonia expressed their full support and active contribution to the effort of organizing the World Championship in Thessaloniki and stressed the benefits of well-known veterans from all over the world paying a visit to our city.


Additionally, Mr Konstantinos Zervas, the vice Mayor of Thessaloniki regarding Quality of Life and vice Mayor also welcomed the opening event along with the MP Konstantinos Gkioulekas, the MP Giorgos Orfanos, the Mayor of Kalamaria, Mr. Theodosis Bakoglidis and the Heads of the Departments of Physical Education & Sports Science in Thessaloniki and Serres, Prof. George Doganis and Ms. Christina Evagelinou, respectively.


The chairman of both the Basketball Veterans Association of Thessaloniki and the organizing committee of the World Championship Mr. Paris Petras gave a detailed account of the major elements of the organization while Mr Vassilis Papacharisis, the person in charge for the volunteering program followed Mr Petras’ presentation.

A lot of people attended the official opening presentation of the Maxibasketball World Championship. Among them, there were the members of the Board of the World Association and the organizing committee, many veterans athletes, former basketball players and sportsmen in general.

To name just a few: George Lyssarides and Theodore Baharoglou (members of the organizing committee), Nikos Mentilides (vice president/administrator of the sports facilities in Thessaloniki and in charge of all the premises), Chris Galazoulas (Professor in DPESS and a member of the working group of the World Championship) representatives of the Local Basketball League, (the general secretary, Mr Antonis Mavrogennis and. the chairman of the championship committee, Mr Alekos Katsianis). Also, Mr Theophilus Patelis, alderman, referees of the Association of Thessaloniki (Georgiadis, Foufis, Poursanidis), Stelios Koukoulekidis (former international referee and active member of the organization in umpiring), Loukas Mylopoulos, George Papadopoulos and Fotis Fotiadis (veteran referees), the former Police Director, Nikiforos Tzatzakis, Spiros Kellis, John Tsimpis, John Athanailides.

Finally, the General Director of the Touring Promotion Organization Mr Nikos Sapountzis and the Head of Division of EOT of Northern Greece, Ms. Persephone Triha also attended the event.

The presentation was moderated by Mr George Parisopoulos, who is both the General Secretary of the Physical Education Teachers Association in Northern Greece and a member of the Veterans Association, at the same time.
